Vladimir Novotny (Diploma Engineer, PhD, BCEE) is a Professor Emeritus at Northeastern University (Boston) and Marquette University (Milwaukee). He has a professional career in research and in academia spanning 57 years and is an internationally recognized expert on water quality management and modeling, diffuse pollution, and total maximum daily loads of pollutants. His career includes research on reducing pollution of water bodies, Lagoon of Venice in Italy, and impoundments in Czechia. During the last 10 years he has been also a panel reviewer to South Florida Water Management District reports on eutrophication in Everglades and harmful algal blooms in the Lake Okeechobee. He lectured in many countries and received Fulbright Fellowship and Specialist Awards. In the International Water Association (IWA), he founded and was the first chairman of the Diffuse Pollution and Eutrophication Specialist Group and for his accomplishments he was in 2002 and 2003 nominated by IWA for the Stockholm Water Prize award. In these fields, he authored and co-authored 11 books, 160 papers, and numerous reports.

 

At the beginning of this century, he joined the international quest of scientists towards reducing the adverse impacts of greenhouse gas emissions from the cities, became a founding member of the IWA's Cities of Future Committee and active in developing concepts and solutions. On these topics, he has made conference and invited endowed presentations such as a Kappe Lectures series at ten universities sponsored by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists, workshop at the Lake Como School of Advanced Studies and University of Pavia in Italy, Universities in Tokyo, Prague and MIT (Boston), and published 4 books and several papers.
