Introducing RDA 2: Resource Description (Live Online - 2 days)

Apr 09, 2014 02:00pm -
Apr 09, 2014 04:00pm

Event Description

This two-part course will be held on Wednesday-Thursday, April 9-10, 2014 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Students must attend both sessions.

In this four-hour live online class (organized as two consecutive, 2-hour modules), an overview of Resource Description and Access (RDA) is presented, with a focus on its structure, its general principles and supporting concepts, and the core elements it defines for bibliographic records.

This class explores RDA’s basic guidelines with respect to the description of bibliographic resources. Catalogers have always provided descriptions of library resources and will continue to do so under RDA, but how it’s done will change somewhat. We also contrast RDA descriptive cataloging practices with those of AACR2 (the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules, 2nd ed.) to assist in the possible transition to RDA.

Practice and readings may be provided for participants to complete on their own.

By the end of the class, students will be:

  • familiar with RDA’s rules for recording data describing books and certain non-print resources
  • comfortable with handling the core descriptive elements of RDA
  • knowledgeable of many of the distinctions between RDA and AACR2 description

Note: RDA’s rules regarding serials will not be included in any depth in this class. The online RDA Toolkit will not be utilized in this class, which focuses on RDA’s content and not the functionality of the online tool.

Prerequisites:
The LYRASIS course Understanding FRBR for RDA and Beyond or knowledge of the FRBR bibliographic entities work, expression, manifestation and item is recommended, as is the LYRASIS course Introducing RDA: 1, Structure, Principles and Core Elements or equivalent knowledge.

This class will be held in the Lyrasis Adobe Connect meeting room. Log-in information will be emailed approximately one week before the course.
