Conducting Ethical Telemental Health Counseling

Please note - this training takes place over 3 days. The training will run 10:00am-1:00pm each day, April 21, April 22, and April 23.

Course Description

Presenting a nine-hour conference over three days on how to provide best practices telemental health (TMH) counseling from the point of pre-screening clients for the appropriateness of this service delivery model, to assessment, through individual sessions, to the point of termination, including important ethical issues related to privacy and confidentiality using e-communication devices. This program will provide the trainee with experiential learning using best practices forms, templates, systems and structures for ethical telemental health practice and prepare the trainee for engaging in competent TMH practice.

Course Objectives

Understand the definitions, provisions, and requirements for Telemental Health set forth by the Office of Health and Human Services, HSS (HIPAA and High-Tech Act, Final Omnibus Rule of March 2013), the guidelines set forth by NASW, LPCA and EAPA, and technical guidelines as established by the American Telemedicine Association and the International Society for Telemental Health Online.

Grasp the competencies necessary for providing ethical practice within today’s high-tech world including the use of cellular telephones, emails, video conferencing and related technologies.

Comprehend the importance of confidentiality of our client’s protected health information, PHI, to ensure maximum security while minimizing exposure to litigation for outdated practices and/or “willful neglect”.

Identify specific client groups that may necessitate the use of TeleMental Health services.

Know the indications and contraindications of client selections for possible provision of Distance Counseling services based on their diagnosis, technical skills and other important factors.

Comprehend the components of the ethical decision making process, including stage of ethical decision making, models of ethical decision making, and the ethical decision process worksheet, as applied to the ethical use of Telemental health services.

Comprehend the essential back-up resources and systems necessary to conduct ethical distance counseling services.

Apply systematic approach to best practices in telemental health from point of first contact to point of termination.

Integrate important improvements in clinical protocols including but not limited to informed consent, client forms, releases of information, use of encrypted and unencrypted emails and other important procedures for an effective and ethical practice.

Learn best practices in crisis management when engaging in telemental health services.

Utilize best practices forms and templates for effective telemental health practice

Understand the key competencies of effective telemental health services.

Understand the key clinical and ethical issues related to effective termination when using telemental health services.

Comprehend how to select the telemental health model(s) that is best for you.

Apply course content to the participant’s clinical skills through the use of the training materials in discussions, exercises and role plays based in the course content and materials

All three days of the conference will include interactive scenario analysis, interactive role playing, and the practice of techniques incorporating knowledge from the presentation of material.

 

Attendees will earn 9.0 Category I Contact Hours, including 3.0 Category I Contact Hours of Ethics.

The training begins at 10:00 am and ends at 1:00 pm (EST) each day.

If a registrant cancels more than 10 days before the event, a refund will be issued by check or credit back to your credit card, minus a 10% administrative fee.

 

If cancelation occurs less than 10 days prior to the event, no refund will be issued but you may request a credit towards a future training to be used within 1 year of the cancelation date. Call the Chapter Office (804-204-1339) to cancel within 10 days of the training. A request for credit may be granted at the discretion of the Executive Director in case of a documented emergency.
