Authorities: Clean Up & Remediation
120 min
In this session, we will discuss authorities clean-up and remediation to ensure that our records have the best and most accurate metadata! We'll talk about how to verify authority information when cataloging and what to do when you find conflicts (or nothing). We'll also talk about tools to do metadata cleanup from OpenRefine and MARCEdit to options in outsourcing. We'll also talk about how OCLC can  "help" with data cleanup as well as importance (& challenges of) controlling subject headings. Established catalogers to those just getting started will find some useful and insightful takeaways for dealing with this oh-so-important work.
Suggested prerequisite: Basic familiarity with RDA terminology and/or basic principles of authority work will be useful. See: Any RDA and/or Authority related content including June 2019 in the SEFLIN Library.
Resources and exercises for post-class work will be provided.
Audience: Cataloging, Technical Services, Digital Library, Institutional Repository, Systems, staff, as well as any library staff interested in authority data.
