In this webinar, we’ll examine the attitudes and assumptions that underpin faculty selection and use of course materials. Analyzing data we collected through a series of faculty interviews occurring from January-March 2019, we’ll discuss themes, challenges, opportunities, and areas for further exploration. Particular emphasis will be made on how open educational resources (OER) fit into this conversation, given their potential for improving pedagogy, learning, and accessibility in the classroom. 

You will learn: 

- The factors that influence decision-making around course material selection and use;
- How to understand and articulate the importance of alternative models for licensing and providing course content and why they are worth pursuing; and
- How to integrate OER into conversations around existing or future collections. 

About the presenters: 

Erik Rayment recently graduated from the MLIS program at Western University. He completed an 8-month co-operative education placement at the University of Guelph Library, where he provided support for research help and various user experience projects. He is currently working as a Collections Registrar at The Royal Canadian Regiment Museum, and as a Virtual Reference Operator with Scholars Portal, Ask A Librarian.

Ali Versluis is the Open Educational Resources Librarian at the University of Guelph, which resides on the ancestral lands of the Attawandaron people and the current treaty lands and territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit. In this role, Ali educates and liaises with the university community on open content, licensing, and student-centered pedagogy. She tweets half-baked thoughts and pictures of plants @aliversluis.
