Past practice treated all persons with intellectual disabilities as a homogeneous group. Recent advances in policy, practice, and research have moved the field toward a greater understanding of the true heterogeneity of the population served under this label. Clinical practice is consequently shifting in response to the sociopoliticial influence and the empirical findings. In this session, case examples will be used to demonstrate how these emerging influences are shifting the nature of clinical intervention.
