Advances in genetic diagnostic technology have allowed the identification of several specific genetic syndromes associated with mental retardation and psychiatric symptoms. Knowing the underlying cause of a person's disability has important implications for genetic counseling, anticipation of medical needs, educational interventions and behavior management. The behavioral and cognitive characteristics of fragile X and Smith-Magenis syndromes will be described in detail as illustrative examples.
