Neurological Development and the Environment: Challenges and Opportunities
Ted Schettler, MD, MPH, Science & Environmental Health Network, Ann Arbor, MI

Produced in 2007.

Brain development begins soon after conception and continues throughout fetal life, infancy, childhood, and adolescence. Multiple factors, including genetics, nutrition, social circumstances, and exposure to toxic chemicals and infectious agents, interact to influence the course of neurodevelopment with lifelong implications. This presentation reviews the cascade of events involved in neurodevelopment and provides examples of environmental factors that can alter that trajectory. Challenges and examples of opportunities for intervention are discussed.
