The Learning and Developmental Disabilities Initiative: Preventing Toxic Threats to Neurodevelopment
Elise Miller, MEd, Institute for Children’s Environmental Health (ICEH), Freeland, WA; Ted Schettler, MD, MPH, Science & Environmental Health Network, Ann Arbor, MI

Learning and developmental disabilities affect at least one in six youth. Severe mental illness has tripled since the early 1990s. Emerging science suggests that certain neurotoxicants, such as lead, mercury and pesticides, are linked to neurobiological problems from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) to Asperger’s to Schizophrenia. This session presents model programs addressing these issues and practical suggestions for preventing exposures. 2007
