Creating School Communities of Support for Children With Food Allergies 

Presented by: Michael Pistiner, MD, MMSc, Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates, Pediatric Allergist, Boston Children's Hospital, Voluntary Instructor of Pediatrics,, Co-founder and Content Creator and Anne H. Sheetz, RN, MPH, NEA-BC

The speakers will share evidence based and best practice guidance and strategies, consistent with the CDC guidelines for making school settings safe for students with LTAs. They will discuss the (a) importance of LTA awareness and communication among parents, students, staff and providers when a student with an LTA attends school, (b) issue of divisiveness when this communication is lacking, (c) critical role of the school nurse in managing the program, (d) psycho/social issues associated with food allergies, including bullying, and (e) importance of label reading, cross contact, and hidden ingredients. A strong focus will be on the recognition of allergic reactions and anaphylaxis, as well as the administration of epinephrine, and referral to emergency services. Massachusetts (MA) has one of the highest LTA rates in the country, as well as a mandated reporting system when epinephrine is administered in the school setting. Speakers will present data on such issues as type of allergen, who administered the, epinephrine, the school location where symptoms first occurred and the lessons learned. In addition they will give an overview of the cost benefits study of having a qualified fulltime school nurse in the building.

Attendees will be able to:

  • Understand important principles of food allergy and anaphylaxis management in the school setting.
  • Understand the necessity for school wide awareness and education.
  • Apply nationally relevant lessons learned from Massachusetts’s experience with the management of life threatening allergies (LTAs) over the past 20 years.
