This course will outline a specific program to aid in fall prevention, specific to an inpatient rehabilitation setting. Fall prevention is a focus for nearly all hospitals. Rehabilitation units face a unique challenge in fall prevention, with a demand to encourage increased independence in short periods of time, while still maintaining safety.
Despite its documented validity and utility on inpatient acute hospital units, the Morse Fall Scale identifies nearly all patients on rehabilitation units as high fall risk due to diagnoses and history. This may desensitize staff on such units to true risk. A ‘Low Fall Risk’ program, utilizing Functional Independence Measure (FIM) scores, is an evidenced informed approach to truly establish fall risk on an inpatient rehabilitation unit. Identifying fall risk with more specificity allows less staff time to be spent unnecessarily supervising patients who do not need it, and more staff time to be present for those who are at risk of falls and associated complications.
This course will provide specific details (and supporting research) for establishing a ‘low fall risk’ program and the benefits that are associated with more accurate fall risk identification.
At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:
Identify at least 2 risks associated with falls.
Define parameters for identifying patients as ‘low fall risk’ on an inpatient rehabilitation unit.
Identify at least 2 benefits to more accurate identification of fall risk for an inpatient rehabilitation unit.
