This is the fourth installment of our five-part series on jointed precast concrete pavements presented by The National Precast Concrete Association and the American Concrete Pavement Association. In this video, we will examine aspects of fabricating jointed precast concrete panels, as well as installing them for pavement repair and rapid reconstruction projects.
This is an important topic for agencies/owners, contractors, consultants and others with an interest in precast concrete pavements.
The first part of this presentation will focus on the fabrication process, from the development of shop drawings to delivery of the panels to the job site. Topics that will be discussed include: scheduling; batching equipment; testing; shop drawings; National Precast Concrete Association (NPCA) plant certification; forms; casting beds for non-planar panels; slot formers; mild steel reinforcing; prestressing; pre- and post-pour checks; casting (including consolidation and finishing); curing; and storage and shipping.
The second part of the presentation will focus on essential details for installing jointed precast concrete pavement panels. The webinar will cover: work room at the job site; work windows; marking out/surveying; saw cutting and removal of existing pavement; excavation equipment; undercutting, if necessary; field-installed dowels; sawing top slots; placement equipment; methods for grade control (of the slabs); installation of bedding material; working with existing and new stabilized bases; installing dowel grout material; and sawing and sealing of joints. This section will also cover important issues related to installation over existing cement-treated base, existing permeable base and new stabilized base (lean concrete base, rapid-setting).
