Putting Libraries in the Publishing Driver’s Seat

Lately it seems libraries are in the back seat when it comes to providing access to e-books and other digital content. While 2013 was a break-through year in that ALA advocacy brought all major publishers into the library e-book market, work continues on licensing terms. One emerging trend promises to enable library leadership and deepen community connections around content development. Libraries have a long history of enabling content creation—from offering access to source materials to supporting research to providing space for work and inspiration. Now a growing number of libraries are expanding these activities by directly supporting publication, as well as curating and distributing this new content. Learn more about the rise of library publishing and its different manifestations, as well as issues on the horizon.
