Rajiv Sood, M.D., F.A.C.S.- Reconstructive Plastic Surgeon

Dr. Sood grew up in Albany, New York. He attended Union College in Schenectady, New York, graduating with a pre-medical focus and earned a BS with a dual major of Biology and French. He attended Albany Medical College, New York and graduated in 1984. He completed 5 years of General Surgery Residency at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He then completed his Plastic Surgery Residency at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio in 1991. He went on to a hand, nerve, and microsurgical fellowship at the Raymond Curtis Hand Center, John's Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland in 1992. Dr. Sood is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery with added qualifications in hand and microsurgery.

After completing his training, Dr. Sood joined the faculty of the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, Indiana and became a member of University Plastic Surgeons based at the IU School of Medicine. He was promoted to Associate Professor of Surgery in 1996 and Professor of Surgery in 2006.  He was subsequently named the Sanford and Thelma Glanz Professor of Surgery in 2012  He then rose to the position of Chairman of Plastic Surgery and Program Director at Indiana University from 2013-2017.  Since 2018, he has accepted a position as an attending physician at Eskenazi Health in Indianapolis, as Medical Director of the Richard Fairbanks Burn and Wound Center.

 Dr Sood became the Medical Director of the Richard Fairbanks Burn Center at Eskenazi Health in 1992, which is a nationally recognized center for burn care and wound healing. He has presented over 200 papers regionally, nationally, and internationally.  He serves on various hospital committees, and continues to organize and lead the burn team’s international medical mission trips to El Salvador and Kenya to provide care to impoverished pediatric and adult burn patients and breast cancer survivors.  He actively raised money for the development and construction of the Richard M. Fairbanks Burn Center, the pediatric burn center in San Salvador, El Salvador, and most recently the Harry Dyer Burn Center in Kenya. He has been recognized nationally and internationally for his research interests, including assessing the physiological effects of breast reduction surgery, care of large TBSA burns with cultured epithelial autograft, burn reconstruction and the use of dermal substitutes, and the use of laser technologies in the treatment of hypertrophic burn scars. He has assisted and participated in the production of multiple public service announcements intended to educate the public on fire prevention and instructional videos for burn providers focused on the care of large TBSA burn patients.

Dr. Sood has achieved a prominent national and international reputation and is a well-known investigator and national leader in research and clinical experience in emerging technologies for skin replacement. He has been awarded multiple grants and has written over 30 articles and 16 book chapters. He has edited and co-authored the book "Burn Reconstruction and Rehabilitation" (2006).  He has been continuously nominated as one of AMERICA'S TOP DOCTORS in PLASTIC and RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY.

In February of 2021 Dr Sood joined Burn and Reconstructive Centers(BRCA) as the Chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Services.

Dr. Sood's primary interests include acute and reconstructive burn surgery, treatment of acute and chronic wounds and management of other disorders of skin.
