Event Description

Change Management for a New Reality: Adapting to the New Normal
14-Week Asynchronous ALA Course
(includes 2 one-week breaks for the holidays)

Course Description

The pandemic has changed so much about day-to-day life, and libraries are no exception. As we all work to adapt to and anticipate the new normal, having a practical and conceptual grasp of organizational change management is essential. How can libraries continue to help communities learn, work, and play in a period of unprecedented change?

This course provides you with the skills you need to become proactive in the changing library environment. You will learn the fundamentals of change management, how to build a resilient staff, and how to facilitate incremental steps to reach positive outcomes using real-world examples and case studies from different types of libraries. You will also explore how you can determine realistic goals in different library settings and why library workers today need change leadership in their toolkit.

Even for those who eagerly embrace change, the lectures, discussion, and, most importantly, the real and authentic interaction you share with colleagues during this class will enhance your skill set and help you manage a library work environment that is rapidly evolving.

Learning Outcomes

After completing this eCourse, participants will be able to:

  • Identify ways to spot “early adopters” and fold them into implementation efforts.
  • Explain implementation challenges experienced by exemplary leaders in businesses or libraries and apply solutions.
  • Analyze the range and complexity of change leadership styles.
  • Apply research-based best practices to significant areas of change leadership responsibility.

  • Create a personal growth plan for continued change leadership development.
