Eating Bugs: Summer Reading Saves the Planet​

About This Session:

The theme for the 2019 TD Summer Reading Club is The Natural World. At a time of its most urgent need, focusing on the planet is the ideal choice. Our diets play a key role in the creation of greenhouse gases contributing to climate change. Libraries across Canada have an opportunity to share with children a more sustainable way of living and eating that is practiced by 2 billion people in other countries. Entomophagy is the term for consuming insects, a very rare practice in North America but its benefits are considerable. Webinar participants will learn about the topic and how to offer it as a summer program. Supplemental materials for children, including a certificate and informational handout, will be provided. This session will also include a discussion with Entomo Farm of Norwood, Ontario, North America's largest human-grade edible insect farm.

About the Presenter:

Michael Manchester is the Program Services Coordinator for the Tillsonburg branch of the Oxford County Library in southwestern Ontario. Michael researched and presented on this subject as a PA Day program in October 2018 and subsequently offered it to other branches.
