First in a series on “advocacy for special libraries”, this foundational webinar outlines the principles of building sustainability into your special library or information service. We will cover the basics of promoting the special library to senior management: Adapting to organizational realities; Developing a strategy – SWOT analysis leading to positioning, customer segments and targets; A value campaign including optimal language and financials, and the role of champions and networking.

You will learn:

1) Why it is difficult for organizations to value information services;
2) How to learn from a SWOT analysis to build a value proposition; and
3) How to plan a campaign to promote the value of your information service to senior management.

About the presenter:

Maggie Weaver has been an information researcher, special librarian and self-employed information professional in 3 countries. In every position, she has always run her information service as a business. She knows who the most important clients are, which of her services each client values most, how to use the more-valued services to subsidize the less-valued, how to communicate with each client in their own frame of reference, and how to convey her own enthusiasm for information.
