About this Session:
Intellectual freedom is a topic that reaches across and affects all facets of libraries and librarianship, in each case presenting us with unique challenges and opportunities. In this OCULA webinar, we bring together some of these perspectives, with the intention of broadening our thinking about this topic. Nailisa Tanner will present an overview of some recent critiques of the current model of intellectual freedom in the Library and Information Studies field, with particular attention on the “marketplace of ideas” frame of civic engagement. Myron Groover peers deep into the problem of diminishing support for archival preservation and the possible impact this will have on intellectual freedom. He will present webinar attendees with big questions that flow out of issues of reduced record keeping and archival funding: will this have unforeseen consequences for intellectual freedom? How do they condition the questions we are able to ask of our own past?

This session will be followed by an optional Virtual Journal Club discussion on Slack.

About the Presenters:
Nailisa Tanner is the Collections and Outreach Librarian at the OISE Library, University of Toronto Libraries. Myron Groover is the Archives and Rare Books Librarian at McMaster University Library. A third speaker (TBA) will join them.

VJC webinars will be paired with relevant readings (both academic and non-academic in nature) and will be followed by a facilitated virtual discussion about the texts. We hope this discussion will provide participants with the opportunity to continue the conversation beyond the webinar, critically evaluate the relevant literature, and build communities of practice.

Within such a diverse sector, it can be difficult to keep up to date on all of the issues that arise. In response to the challenges faced by those working in libraries, and in an effort to share knowledge and increase awareness on current topics in academic libraries, we have developed a series of free webinars. From exploring core theories to applications in practice, our presenters will share how academic library staff can get involved as well as discuss the challenges that they might encounter.
