Course Description
This course will get you started creating effective online learning experiences. We’ll cover instructional design models, learning theories, motivation and memory, backward design, and effective online instructional strategies. We’ll also cover graphic design principles, online accessibility guidelines and legal requirements, and we’ll go over copyright, fair use, and Creative Commons so that you are up to speed on reusing existing content and protecting your own work.

Session Descriptions
Session 1 – Overview of Teaching and Learning
This session will introduce instructional design models and how people learn. We’ll cover ADDIE, SAM, learning theories, memory, motivation, and feedback, and diverse ways of learning.
Session 2 – Backward Design 1
This session will introduce backward design, also known as competency-based learning. We’ll cover the basics of lesson design and get started writing measurable learning objectives.
Session 3 – Backward Design 2
In this session, we’ll practice writing measurable learning objectives and aligning content and assessment to create an effective lesson.
Session 4 - Principles of Effective Online Teaching
In this session, we’ll talk about how getting social can improve learning, how using Universal Design for Learning principles benefits every learner, and we’ll introduce accessibility guidelines.
Session 5 - Instructional Strategies
This session will cover strategies for teaching a variety of content and go deeper into constructing active learning experiences. We’ll talk about developing your own content and assessment and adapting existing materials.
Presenter:
Lindsay O'Neill consults with and trains faculty and librarians on effective pedagogy, instructional design, educational technology, elearning development, open licensing, and accessibility. She holds a Master of Education, specializing in Instructional Design, as well as a Master of Library and Information Science.
She is also a faculty member in California State University–Fullerton’s Master of Science in Instructional Design and Technology program.
