Creating Anti-Racist Storytimes: Activism, Belonging, and Change Workshop
Thursday, July 1, 2021
2:30 pm - 4:00 pm EST

In this workshop, librarian and literacy activism expert Janet Damon shows you how you can use storytime programs to help facilitate an anti-racist environment in your community. You will learn how to share and discuss stories that help parents and children talk about race, identity, and belonging in age-appropriate ways. You’ll also explore authentic examples of programming and learn ways to begin your own anti-racist and anti-biased storytimes for children and families.

By participating in this event, participants will:

  • Learn ways to design and promote anti-racist/anti-biased storytime events
  • Connect activities with stories that help families and children talk about race, identity, and belonging
  • Explore authentic examples of programming and get ideas for beginning their own journey

Janet R. Damon is the Library Services Specialist for Denver Public Schools and the founder of Afros and Books. She has more than twenty years of experience as a librarian and educator in urban schools. She has also provided diversity and equity training for librarians and paraprofessional staff in a district that serves 93.000 students and over 200+ schools.
