Event Description

Building the Resiliency of the Next Generation of Social Workers: A leadership development program

Race and racism are hot-button issues in today's society. And while many trainings are geared to addressing eliminating biases, there is a gap in training for building African American's resiliency in the face of racism. This gap is increasingly significant to the Social Work profession; as according to the Council of Social Work Education, African Americans are the number one demographic to obtain BSW. This combined with African Americans being more likely to experience adverse childhood events and work with high-risk populations, points to the increased risk of African American social workers experiencing vicarious trauma and burn-out. The goal of this training is to build the leadership and resiliency skills of African American social workers. Through reviewing the parallel process of being a trauma-informed provider and professional.

Session 1 – Self-Awareness a Core Competence

The first session in Building the Resiliency of the Next Generation of Social Workers: A leadership development program focuses on building participants' awareness of adverse childhood events and their long-term impacts on SAMSHA's eight dimensions of wellness.
