Event Description

Vicarious Traumatization...when the treater is not ok

This presentation is for students, social work professionals, first responders, counselors, nurses, police officers, psychiatrists as well as those who are in the "helping profession" and have access to those who have had traumatic experiences on a regular basis. Vicarious trauma or secondary trauma is a process that occurs when the person in the role of the helper is affected by exposure to traumatic stories as a result of caring.

This training is relevant for social work students who are new and entering the field as it prepares them to be aware of the signs of vicarious trauma (VT), normalizes the process and provides resources and for transforming VT. It also serves as a refresher for those already in the field that are impacted by exposure to traumatic stories. In order for counselors, therapists and social workers to continue to be effective they will need to have an understanding of VT and how it can become problematic if not acknowledged and addressed.

Course Objectives:

  • Receive a working definition of vicarious trauma (VT)
  • Learn some common signs and symptoms of VT
  • Become aware of how VT impacts a person's behaviors, interpersonal relationships, job performance, etc.
  • Receive effective strategies to assist with transforming VT to prevent burnout/compassion fatigue, mental and/or physical health issues.
