Seventy percent of U.S. adults have experienced a traumatic event at least once in their lives—often before age 18. The results can be disrupted brain development, adoption of at-risk health behaviors, and increased risk for disease, disability, social problems, and physical and mental illness.
In response, social workers and behavioral health providers must understand the many aspects of trauma as evidenced through the latest research. This program is designed for mental health professionals or advanced graduate students who are actively providing therapeutic services to clients.
In the NASWVA Professional Certification in Trauma and Resilience Informed Care training program, you will receive 37.5 hours of in-depth training covering foundational therapeutic skills critical to all client work, especially those clients with histories of violated safety and security. The program will help you learn and integrate evidence-informed trauma and resilience treatment skills into your everyday practices.
Instructor: Dr. Allison Jackson is CEO of Integration Solutions, Inc., a company that provides consultation services, educational programs, and technical assistance to human service organizations and integrated healthcare systems. Specializing in trauma-informed care and training people that resilience is possible when proper information and support is given, her company helps institutions further their practices as they guide people toward healing and recovery. Raised in Richmond, Va., Dr. Jackson has provided leadership development services via behavioral health, education, child welfare, and criminal justice systems for more than 20 years. The program is designed to instruct in two ways: live online learning and individualized time focusing on didactic work in each area of content. You will select a time for on-demand learning during an identified week to access or watch video instruction, visual presentations, actual application skills that others have used to enhance achievement of their clients’ goals, practical resources, and more.
After each on-demand training, you will engage in a live virtual class with the instructor, where you can build on learned skills, ask questions, engage in small-group consultation with others, and gain feedback from Dr. Jackson.
The certificate program involves lecture, in-class exercises and discussion, group consultation, and demonstration. While the focus of the course is on applying these knowledge, skills and abilities to clinical practice, some past participants have reported that the course also required them to face and reflect on personal issues that advanced their own healing process.

Phase-Oriented Treatment Approaches
During the last 20 years research, leading institutions recognize that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are common across all populations and provide the basis for many common public health challenges and social problems that adults, children, and families face (Anda & Felitti, 2011). For some individuals, ACEs can result in traumatic memories and responses that become barriers to overall health and well-being.
Trauma-informed models of care are critical in addressing biological alterations, arousal functioning, and relational challenges that can arise as a result of singular or chronic forms of trauma. As Dr. Ricky Greenwald (Greenwald, 2012) explains, trauma can create sore spots around certain experiences. Normally, when this experience happens, a person would have a small response, but with a sore spot, clients respond disproportionally to everyday experiences. These inflated responses often harm clients by preventing them from accessing goals related to health, relationships, and overall quality of life.
Research suggests that phase modeled programs are the standard of care for clients who have experienced trauma (Foa, Keane, & Friedman, 2009). Trauma-informed, phase-oriented models of care focus on clients’ treatment motivation and their progression through the phases based on clients’ readiness for each stage of change. These models usually incorporate three phases of treatment focused on Safety and Stabilization, Reprocessing of Traumatic Memories, and Reintegration (Herman 1992, Janet, 1889).
Using evidence-informed interventions throughout each phase of treatment, clients are encouraged to understand the impact that traumatic events (including, but not limited to, ACEs) have had on their ability to reach their goals, develop skills in achieving safety, become educated on techniques to reduce the physiological impact of past trauma, process their trauma, and feel empowered to harness their strengths to move beyond the barriers their past trauma has created.
Additional Evidence-based Therapeutic Treatment Factors
During the last few decades, clinical research has identified important therapeutic treatment factors that enhance clinical outcomes across client groups. These key factors are the foundation of the Trauma Therapy Certificate: The Resilience Effect™ training program and are integrated into all treatment goals and life planning goals.
It has become widely accepted that certain trans-diagnostic common factors exist in the therapeutic process. These common factors relate to the impact of client and clinician characteristics, relationship factors, motivation, clarity of expectations of treatment, and other ingredients of the therapeutic process common to any psychotherapy, regardless of treatment modality or model. Successful treatment models embrace these factors and incorporate them as part of their foundation.
Valuing the Importance of Feedback
Feedback helps everyone get a better picture of where they are and where they are going. Regular feedback ensures that clients and their support systems are truly heard throughout the therapeutic process. Feedback allows clients, their support systems, and professional(s) to evaluate changes in client progress, strengthen therapeutic alliance, provide more accurate case conceptualizations, and facilitate a deepening in treatment planning discussions (Hatfield & Ogles, 2006).
The NASWVA Professional Certification in Trauma and Resilience Informed Care Training Program shares feedback approaches that clinicians can integrate into their assessment and treatment planning process both at the start and end of each treatment session, as well as during the evaluation of discharge planning. Key areas for feedback include motivation for treatment, life satisfaction, and therapeutic alliance. Additional opportunities for feedback are incorporated into the treatment process based on case-specific needs.
Training commitment and dates:
The NASWVA Professional Certification in Trauma and Resilience Informed Care Training Program will be comprised of 37.5 hours of online training. This material will be provided over a course of 5 days to participants for a total of 7.5 hours of learning each day. Three days of the content will be delivered via on-demand (prerecorded) webinar and offer video, PowerPoint and resources coupled with quizzes and feedback opportunities to assure learning. Two days of the content will be offered via live webinar on a Learning Management System (Zoom). There will also be a brief introductory session prior at the beginning.
Participants are expected to attend all live webinars at the scheduled date/time. If there is a crisis or emergency that prevents that, a participant will need to work with the instructor to see if make up time and work can be accepted.
For the on-demand portion, participants will be given a set amount of time to view the video, PowerPoint and resources for that section. It is highly recommended that participants complete the on demand work as indicated in the schedule so they can maximize their practice and learning time during live sessions.

Attendees will earn 37.5 Category I Contact Hours.

If a registrant cancels more than 10 days before the event, a refund will be issued by check or credit back to your credit card, minus a 10% administrative fee.
If cancelation occurs less than 10 days prior to the event, no refund will be issued but you may request a credit towards a future training to be used within 1 year of the cancelation date. Call the Chapter Office (804-204-1339) to cancel within 10 days of the training. A request for credit may be granted at the discretion of the Executive Director in case of a documented emergency.
