A Series on Understanding and Nurturing Social Development in Young Children
SESSION THREE
Deborah Weinstock-Savoy, PhD, instructor
This session will review the developmental steps of playing with peers in children from infancy through kindergarten age: solo play, child-adult play, 1-to-1 peer play ('parallel' and 'collaborative'), small group play, and large group play. We will focus on how to support each of these stages, and how to help children 'move up' from stage to stage. We will discuss strategies for helping children learn to deal with peer conflicts; children who play well 1-to-1 with adults, but not with peers; and tips for teaching central skills such as how to take turns and share.
