A Series on Understanding and Nurturing Social Development in Young Children

This session will focus on identifying and helping children from infancy through kindergarten age who have particular difficulty joining play. We will review various factors that can influence childrenÕs peer comfort and play skills, including temperament; shyness; anxiety problems such as selective mutism; social skills deficits; and autism spectrum disorders including Aspergers. We will explore a variety of strategies for teaching these children how to initiate, join, and sustain play with other children, including how to help them deal with potential problems and peer conflicts.
