Description: Project Golden Eagle is a nurse-driven, quality improvement initiative to better assess for and communicate PTSD related behaviors specific to those Veterans most at risk for experiencing emergence delirium. Prescreened veterans receive a gold surgical cap and special logo embossed ID bracelet to visually communicate the potential for emergence delirium.
Two components are implemented to reduce both risk of emergence delirium and the potential for physical injury:
- Anesthesia staff prescribe a specific medication strategy to reduce that likelihood, and
- All peri-operative staff are trained to apply medically safe manual-restraints to reduce the potential for injuries.
Finally, staff complete two hands-on practice events of an actor-simulated emergence delirium episode, and as a class, conducts an after-action-review to improve that teams understanding of the stated objectives and hands-on techniques. To date, our improved Project Golden Eagle has successfully reduced our emergence delirium veteran and staff injury rate to “ZERO”!
Target Audience: Clinical and non-clinical healthcare physicians, nurses, allied / ancillary staff and educators, civilian, DOD, and military personnel.
