Emergency psychiatry fellows work in our Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP), located in a top academic setting, within the New York Presbyterian Hospital at the Columbia Campus. With a diverse patient population, the CPEP is comprised of 18 psychiatric emergency beds, and 6 Extended Observation Beds. It is staffed by Psychiatric Attendings, Residents, Registered nurses, students, licensed social workers and admission personnel – a vibrant team of up to 15 people a day, where professional peer support and supervision is also a priority. Our CPEP is located in an urban community, and has about 6000 visits a year. Exciting new initiatives include provision of telepsychiatry consultations to our remote sister hospitals, and a volunteer lead well-being therapeutic program. While developing expertise in emergency management of psychiatric patients, fellows teach in our Urgent Psychiatry Lecture Series, and are expected to develop a Quality Improvement project, with potential for publication. There is possibility of combining this fellowship with the Public Psychiatry Fellowship, for dual training. The Consultation Liaison Division has an ACGME-accredited fellowship in Psychosomatic Medicine that offers excellent training within a 730 bed academic medical center and a major medical school.
