The Educator’s Compass:
Navigating the Changing Landscape of Academic Psychiatry

The landscape of academic psychiatry is changing.  Over the past several years, psychiatric educators have experienced the introduction of new milestones and entrustable professional activities, an overwhelming (and almost unmanageable) number of applications for our residency programs, an increasing recognition of the magnitude of burnout in ourselves and our trainees, and changes in the delivery of healthcare.  These changes impact our approach to teaching, assessment, career and professional development, and recruitment to the field.  This year’s AAP annual meeting theme emphasizes academic psychiatrists’ role as leaders in finding innovative solutions and novel approaches for these challenges.  I hope you will be inspired to share the amazing work you are doing at each of your institutions with your colleagues when we come together in the fall for our annual meeting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin!  For those of you who have never ventured to Milwaukee, I encourage you to check out all this amazing city has to offer – from local craft breweries to amazing museums to a three mile RiverWalk with shopping and dining (and more!), there is much to explore, and you may want to consider taking advantage of the Labor Day holiday immediately preceding the meeting for a getaway with friends or family.  I look forward to seeing you all in Milwaukee!
