This program will examine Conduct Risk, Culture Risk and Reputation Risk and how they are differentiated, managed and mitigated. The cultural elements of cohesion, control and compliance will be discussed as will be business survival strategies in this age of disruption and hyper-competition. Our panelists will share insights and strategies that have worked for them. Together we will take away practical tips that help us identify and navigate unwanted, unhealthy risk at the organizational and individual level better enabling us to build healthy, innovative, wise-risk managing and profitable enterprises.

  • What advice would you give to risk managers who get push back from business leaders? 
  • What do we do with culture that shows itself on-line where information is accessible to staff and the public instantaneously? What is the relationship between culture, social media and reputation risk?
James P. Bergin, Deputy General Counsel and Senior Vice President of the Legal Group, Federal Reserve Bank of New York
James P. Bergin is Deputy General Counsel and Senior Vice President of the Legal Group of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
As Deputy General Counsel, Mr. Bergin is responsible for the legal team that advises on matters relating to the New York Fed’s implementation of monetary policy and other activity conducted by the New York Fed’s Markets Group, and supervisory and regulatory matters related to the New York Fed’s oversight of financial institutions. In addition, he oversees the New York Fed’s bank applications function.
Jim joined the Federal Reserve in January 2005 as an attorney. He moved to the Bank’s Supervision Group in 2011 to serve as head of the Legal & Compliance Risk Department. In 2012, Jim moved to the Executive Office, and served as chief of staff to President William C. Dudley until the end of 2015.
Mr. Bergin holds a bachelor's degree in history and English from Rutgers College and a juris doctor from Harvard Law School. Before joining the Federal Reserve, he was in private practice, specializing in energy and infrastructure finance, with an international law firm based in New York.
Carlo di Florio, Chief Risk Officer & Head of Strategy, Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA)
Carlo di Florio joined FINRA in June 2013 as Chief Risk Officer and Head of Strategy. In this capacity, he leads the Office of Risk & Strategy, which includes Strategic Planning, Emerging Regulatory Issues, Enterprise Risk Management and Operational Risk. These functions support FINRA's mission of investor protection and market integrity by teaming across the organization to define and align strategy, monitor emerging regulatory issues, promote enterprise risk management and support ongoing program improvement and quality assurance.
Prior to joining FINRA, Mr. di Florio served as the Director of the SEC's Office of Compliance Inspections and Examinations. In that role, he oversaw the SEC's nationwide examination programs for, among other entities, investment advisers, broker-dealers, mutual funds, securities markets and clearing agencies. Before joining the SEC in 2010, Mr. di Florio was a partner in the Financial Services Risk & Regulatory Practice of PricewaterhouseCoopers, advising financial services clients across banking, capital markets, asset management and insurance.
Mr. di Florio received his Master of Laws with distinction from Georgetown University Law Center, his J.D. from Penn State University and his bachelor's degree from Tulane University. He has been named by the National Association of Corporate Directors as one of the 100 Most Influential Leaders in Corporate Governance, by The National Law Journal as one of the Top 50 Trailblazers & Pioneers in Governance, Risk Management and Compliance, and by Worth Magazine as one of the 100 Most Powerful People in Finance.
Nancy Foster, President and Chief Executive Officer, The Risk Management Association
Nancy Foster is President and Chief Executive Officer of The Risk Management Association. She became the ninth chief executive of RMA on January 1, 2018. In this capacity, she is responsible for developing and implementing the strategic direction as well as providing oversight for overall operations of the association.
Prior to joining RMA, Nancy was Executive Vice President with Park Sterling Bank (2010-2017) where she was responsible for management of the bank’s credit, marketing, retail, mortgage, and wealth management lines of business. Nancy was previously Chief Risk Officer of CIT Group, Inc., where she was responsible for global enterprise-wide risk management. Nancy chaired the Enterprise Risk Management Committee and had direct responsibility for credit, compliance, and operational risk, as well as independent oversight of market risk. Prior to joining CIT, Nancy was Group Senior Vice President at LaSalle Bank Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of ABN AMRO, NV. During her tenure at LaSalle, she held several senior leadership roles in middle market lending and credit risk management.
Nancy has an MBA in finance and strategy from the University of Chicago, Booth School of Business and a BS in finance and economics from Illinois State University.
Yvonne I. Pytlik, Senior Vice President, Chief Compliance Officer and Head of US Regulatory Compliance, HSBC Global Asset Management (USA)
Yvonne I. Pytlik is currently Senior Vice President, Chief Compliance Officer and Head of US Regulatory Compliance at HSBC Global Asset Management (USA) Inc. in New York.
Ms. Pytlik has a long and distinguished career in compliance as the Chief Compliance Officer, Head of Compliance and Risk and Chair of Compliance Committees at a number of high profile firms, including KPMG, Deutsche Bank and Virtus Investment Partners, responsible for overseeing all compliance matters enterprise-wide for investment advisers, mutual funds and broker dealer businesses. 
Ms. Pytlik is a recognized ERM and compliance industry expert, and frequent speaker addressing Governance, Risk and Compliance issues in the asset management industry. She is a senior executive and one of industry's most highly sought after strategists in compliance risk management for financial institutions. Ms. Pytlik serves on the Board of Governors and Executive Committee at RMA NYC.
Ms. Pytlik is a founder serving on the Board of Directors at Global Compliance Risk Management Corp., a strategic advisory and compliance risk management   firm.  She was previously Head of Compliance and Corporate CCO at Virtus, and Deputy Head of Global Compliance, Risk Management, and Strategic Planning at Deutsche Bank AG. During her tenure at major financial services firms, Ms. Pytlik made numerous significant contributions to the firm's overall compliance organizations, including the development and implementation of global compliance risk management functions in the Americas, Europe, and Asia-Pacific regions.  Ms. Pytlik held senior positions in risk management practice at KPMG and in internal audit at major financial institutions.   She has an M.B.A. from Suffolk University and a B.S. in Management from University of Massachusetts. 
Andrew Stein, Senior Managing Director, Head of Commercial Banking Eastern Region, East West Bank
Mr. Andrew Stein is the Senior Managing Director, Head of Commercial Banking Eastern Region at East West Bank. In his role Andrew is responsible for managing a team of lenders in C&I Middle Market, Project Finance, Specialty Finance, Equipment Finance and Private Equity Sponsored Leveraged Finance Markets.
Andrew has a 25+ year proven track record in commercial banking as a business leader, originator, structurer and underwriter. Most recently having built the C&I lending business in the Eastern Region at East West Bank from start-up into a top performing unit with a portfolio of over $1.5 billion, $60mm in annual income and no credit losses.
Andrew previously served as Senior Vice President at HSH Nordbank AG where he managed an $8 billion portfolio of asset finance transactions. Other positions held include Senior Vice President Team Leader in Structured Finance at Assured Guaranty; Senior Vice President of Capital Markets at Marsh & McLennan Securities and Director of Structured Finance, Asset Backed Commercial Paper Group at Standard & Poor's.
Andrew holds a MBA in Finance with cum laude from NYU Stern School of Business and BBA in Finance from University of Massachusetts-Amherst, Isenberg School of Management.
Thomas Diamante, EVP & Practice Director, Consulting Industrial Psychologist, CCA, Inc.
Dr. Diamante brings more than 20 years of c-level, cross-industry and cross-cultural management consulting experience. He is formerly of Merrill Lynch, Vice President of Corporate Strategy & Organization Capability in Global Securities Research & Economics. At Merrill Lynch he co-led mission-critical product development teams in New York, London and Singapore. He focused on building culture that drives entrepreneurial behavior, innovation and execution while mitigating unhealthy, unwanted, unproductive risk. Prior to Merrill Lynch, Tom was Senior Manager and Lead Change Consultant for KPMG Consulting (BearingPoint).  Earlier in his career, he was National Manager, Human Resources & Executive Development at Altria serving on the Global HR Policy committee supporting business in Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia-Pacific and the Americas.
Tom is President, Consulting Division of The New York State Psychological Association and is Executive Vice President & Practice Director at cca, a boutique human capital consultancy. He is Board Chair, Emeritus for enACT, Inc. an educational non-profit that builds social-emotional skills in underserved New York City schoolchildren. He serves on the Stony Brook University, School of Business Advisory Board and is extensively published in executive coaching, culture change management, learning and development, employment discrimination litigation prevention, performance management and assessment and selection (e.g., Wiley, Jossey-Bass, American Psychological Assoc., Gulf, Erlbaum and peer-reviewed journals). As an adjunct or full-time business faculty, Tom taught for Columbia University (Mailman School for Public Health), Baruch, Adelphi and Stony Brook University.
Tom's consulting experience is distinctive.  He conducts non-financial due diligence for venture capital to reduce investment risk. One noteworthy engagement is his screening of intelligence and security professionals for peacekeeping missions in conflict-laden territories around the world (e.g., Afghanistan, Bosnia, E. Timor, Kosovo, Iran & Iraq). 
He is a member of the McKinsey Executive Panel, The Center for Creative Leadership Insights team and is a Special Expert for the Society for Human Resources Management in Ethics & Corporate Social Responsibility.   Tom is a New York State Licensed Psychologist and member of the National Association of Corporate Directors.  He is also a member of the Board of Governors for the Risk Management Association NY Chapter.  He received a BA from Stony Brook University in psychology and holds a Ph.D. in psychology specializing in industrial & organizational applications from The Graduate Center, City University in New York.
